State of the Geek Forge

Over the past few months, we’ve been busy geeksmiths, both with Geek Forge-related things and our day jobs.  But we’re back and recovered from vacation, and we’re ready to look at all the fun things coming up!  In our previous post, we mentioned our upcoming convention schedule.  As you can see, we’ll be starting 2015 off right!  But until then, we have some other fun things –

Our Store

We started our Etsy store a few years ago to handle the surplus of fun crafts we do, and get a little extra money for our cosplay costs.  We’re excited to announce we’ve added a few new types of items, with more to come!  So far, we’ve added men’s cufflinks and clip-on earrings, and there’s more to come! If there’s anything you’d like to see us make, let us know!

New Projects

We’ve been working to branch into even more geeky goodness, including video tutorials!  Since we’re learning how to do it ourselves, the process is a little slow-going.  We want to give y’all the best information we possibly can!

Old Projects

We still plan to do interviews, cover conventions, and show you all our behind-the-scenes things.

So thanks for sticking with us, and we promise there will be tons of more fun to come!  You can keep up with us over at our Facebook page, Google+ or Instagram.

We’re planning to attend these conventions in some sort of capacity, either as vendors, attendees, press or even guests!  As the conventions get closer, we’ll have more details for you!  And we’re excited about MomoCon’s Cosplay on Ice coming up, so keep an eye out for those costumes, coming soon!

DRAGON CON REVEALS NEW SLEEK, ICONIC LOGO

New Modern Logo Honors Past and Represents the Future of Dragon Con

unnamedATLANTA – July 2, 2014 – Dragon Con, Atlanta’s internationally known pop culture, fantasy and sci-fi convention, has a new logo, the first update in almost 20 years.

The new Dragon Con logo features a dragon in profile contained within a circle, with the Dragon Con name arching across the middle. The new colors are blue and gold with a touch of red, giving the design a bold and contemporary look.

“It was time to freshen up our logo, but it was important to maintain some continuity with the past,” said President Pat Henry. “The new logo honors our past, but also gives us something that represents Dragon Con’s present and future.”

The new logo design translates the former logo into a flatter graphic image which should become iconic and stand the test of time. The design is also easily translated into black and white from its rich color palette. The sleek new logo has modern appeal, but still reflects the convention’s humble beginnings.

“We are not the same show that we were back in 1995. We have experienced tremendous growth, morphing from a small convention that catered to a few specific interests into one embraced by the mainstream culture that encompasses so many aspects of fandom,” Henry said. “As we continue to grow and evolve, we believe our logo should reflect that.”

The modernized logo comes on the heels of the decision to update the convention name from Dragon*Con to Dragon Con, as the convention renews its style to reflect that of its membership and offering the best of pop culture, fantasy and sci-fi to its members in the 21st century.

Temporarily Suspending Custom Orders on July 1

1800395_830673426950054_1385308218_n

It’s getting close to that time – DragonCon!  66 days, or a little over 9 weeks.  It’s time for us to kick the costume-making into high gear, so we will be temporarily suspending custom orders on our Etsy store starting July 1st.  Custom orders will resume after DragonCon, so don’t worry!  We just need more than 24 hours in our day to do our day jobs, work on costumes and props, AND do custom orders for the Etsy store.

Thank you all for understanding, and stay tuned for lots of progress photos!

DragonCon 2012

We’re recovering from DragonCon and the obligatory “Con crud”.  We’ve put up photos here, as well as on our Facebook page.

Our DragonCon adventures included having two photoshoots done by the amazing Paul Cory, hanging with Toronto Batman, participated in some Superhero Costuming Forum shoots, met some awesome people and had an all-around good time.  We’re already discussing costumes for next year, and Jen is toying with the idea of making some superhero-themed purses to go with the ladies’ costumes that don’t have utility belts.

Stay tuned for more surprises, updates on our library project and much more!  Also, we’re shutting down the old site (to minimize confusion), so update your bookmarks!  You’ll want http://www.thegeekforge.org 🙂

5 days!

It’s five days until DragonCon! We finished our super-secret project, and we’re coming down the home stretch!

Here’s what we have left to do:
– fix/remake Deathstroke’s mask
– attach snaps to Deathstroke’s bandolier
– locate circuitry for Shadowrun costume
– practice drone flying
– pack!

As you might have noticed, we have a fancy new website, just in time for DragonCon. Tell your friends!

After DragonCon, we’ll reveal the super-secret project. And stay tuned for more new features. Want to see us make something? Leave a comment below!
